Plant Strawberries for a Sweet, Edible Groundcover

Strawberries are a great plant to cultivate if you are looking for a ground cover plant that is not only charming but also delicious.

While I was on vacation in Northern Arizona not so long ago, I was taking in the sights of some stunning perennial plantings that were located along the street.

The entire design of this area, as well as the way in which they utilized plants with contrasting colors and textures, was of great interest to me. A significant portion of the land was covered with a wide range of different types of ground covers.

On the other hand, I couldn't help but concentrate on the ground cover that had been placed right next to the sidewalk.

After taking a closer look, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the plants in question were strawberry plants.

I love the idea of replacing decorative plants with plants that can be eaten. I love strawberries so much that the idea of growing them as a ground cover in the yard makes perfect sense to me.

I can still vividly recall, when I was a young child, the expansive strawberry field that my grandfather had in his backyard garden in Germany.

Well-maintained strawberries are perennials that last several years.  Strawberry ground cover is ideal with ‘Everbearing’ and ‘Day-Neutral’ varieties.  They grow in most climates.
